Meme: Five Things I Want To Write

Reading Time

Okay, I’m starting a meme of my own, sorta. I’m tagging anyone and everyone that reads that. Of course it is primarily aimed towards fellow writers, but oh well :P. So it is a requirement that everyone who reads this does it. Mwahaha. Okay, not really, but still.

So here is how it works.
1) Write about the top five writing projects you want to do. Books, short stories, whatever.
2) Post the rules and the link to where you got the Meme from in the first place.
3) Tag people.

Here is mine:

1) Finish WISB, the second book, and third book, and potentially any books that might follow. I’m shooting to finish this in at most three books. If I can do it in two, sweet. And of course I would loooooove to go on for many more books.
2) Write an epic science fiction space opera novel. Not Star Wars epic, but just, well, epic. More politically based space opera. I don’t have an idea as of right now. I just want to write one.
3) Write an amazing trilogy of zombie novels that attempts to take a new spin on the genre. I have been wanting to write a zombie novel for the longest time. The problem is in being original in a field that has been bastardized and humiliated by garbage and by legitimately hilarious spoof films (Shaun of the Dead or Biozombie anyone?). That’s a dilemma I’m still having. I can’t write something I know has already been written. 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later are possibly the only films to make any revolutionary changes to the traditional feel of zombie films, and unfortunately even that is being bastardized by cheap rip-off’s and remakes. In the end, if I ever write such a trilogy, I want to turn them into screenplays and start the biggest budget horror film series ever. And Peter Jackson will direct them…in my dreams at least.
4) Finish writing all my short stories that are sitting around in my story bank. Europa Strain, Artemis, Soul For Sale. Then get them published. It’s a lot of work :S.
5) Write a PhD. dissertation on something related to dystopian literature. I’m not sure what though. Perhaps a study in the trends and the evolution of the genre as a whole.

So, ha! You’ve all been tagged!

  1. “So, ha! You’ve all been tagged!”

Not in your life!! 😀 I just finished the last thing you tagged me with, and then I come here and find this. No, noooooooooo way! Not this time. Ahem.

That’s a lot more projects than I thought one person could handle at once! You’re amazing. I agree with the zombie cliche thing. It’s one reason why I shy away from such stories. But if you ever get a fresh one published, it sounds like it will be worth reading.

You know, actually, this meme is neat. I’ll do it, although it’s meme overload ATM.

  2. Woah woah. I’m not taking on all these projects at once lol. Not even close silly. That would be crazy. I don’t have time for much more than short stories and one single novel (in this case WISB).

I’ve got some ideas cooking in my head about the zombie idea. I’ve been considering merging concepts from a novella I’ve yet to finish that would at least provide a semi-original concept I think.

  3. Looking back, I’m not sure why I said they were all at once. *Feels stupid* I guess my idiot brain confused it with the word meter bars on your blog’s main page, somehow.

Better yet, why not merge concepts from *more* than one novella/novel? 😀

  4. Well, I could merge more than one, but right now I only have two concepts. I’ve written some stuff down about it. Not story, just basic ideas of what will go on. I might start writing a little bit on it over the weekend, but I doubt it. I’ve got two short stories I need to finish in June so I can send them out. And two for July and one for August :S. We’ll see!

  5. Okay 😛 I took the challenge & posted. Oh my goodness as I’m not a true writer in the sense of being published. Then again if I actually come up with a short kids book, that would be fun & interesting within my life. All well … thankx for the read and post as it’s good to have our goals. Best of luck!

A Reading List of Dystopian Fiction and Relevant Texts (Apropos of Nothing in Particular)

Why would someone make a list of important and interesting works of dystopian fiction? Or a suggested reading list of works that are relevant to those dystopian works? There is absolutely no reason other than raw interest. There’s nothing going on to compel this. There is nothing in particular one making such a list would hope you’d learn. The lists below are not an exhaustive list. There are bound to be texts I have forgotten or texts you think folks should read that are not listed. Feel free to make your own list and tell me about it OR leave a comment. I’ll add things I’ve missed! Anywhoodles. Here goes:

Duke’s Best EDM Tracks of 2024

And so it came to pass that I finished up my annual Best of EDM [Insert Year Here] lists. I used to do these on Spotify before switching to Tidal, and I continued doing them on Tidal because I listen to an absurd amount of EDM and like keeping track of the tunes I love the most. Below, you will find a Tidal playlist that should be public. You can listen to the first 50 tracks right here, but the full playlist is available on Tidal proper (which has a free version just like Spotify does). For whatever reason, the embedded playlist breaks the page, and so I’ve opted to link to it here and at the bottom of this post. Embeds are weird. Or you can pull songs into your preferred listening app. It’s up to you. Some caveats before we begin:

2025: The Year of Something

We’re nine days into 2025, and it’s already full of exhausting levels of controversy before we’ve even had a turnover in power in my home country of the United States. We’ve seen resignations of world leaders, wars continuing and getting worse and worse (you know where), the owner of Twitter continuing his tirade of lunacy and demonstrating why the billionaire class is not to be revered, California ablaze with a horrendous and large wildfire, right wing thinktanks developing plans to out and attack Wikipedia editors as any fascist-friendly organization would do, Meta rolling out and rolling back GenAI profiles on its platforms, and, just yesterday, the same Meta announcing sweeping changes to its moderation policies that, in a charitable reading, encourage hate-based harassment and abuse of vulnerable populations, promotion and support for disinformation, and other problems, all of which are so profound that people are talking about a mass exodus from the platform to…somewhere. It’s that last thing that brings me back to the blog today. Since the takeover at Twitter, social networks have been in a state of chaos. Platforms have risen and fallen — or only risen so much — and nothing I would call stability has formed. Years ago, I (and many others far more popular than me) remarked that we’ve ceded the territory of self-owned or small-scale third party spaces for massive third party platforms where we have minimal to no control or say and which can be stripped away in a tech-scale heartbeat. By putting all our ducks into a bin of unstable chaos, we’re also expending our time and energy on something that won’t last, requiring us to expend more time and energy finding alternatives, rebuilding communities, and then repeating the process again. In the present environment, that’s impossible to ignore.1 This is all rather reductive, but this post is not the place to talk about all the ways that social networks have impacted control over our own spaces and narratives. Another time, perhaps. I similarly don’t have space to talk about the fact that some of the platforms we currently have, however functional they may be, have placed many of us in a moral quagmire, as in the case of Meta’s recent moderation changes. Another time… ↩
