Announcement: The Histories “I Need a New Computer” Write-a-Thon

Reading Time

Starting now, I’m campaigning to get at least 100 people to buy an entry in The Histories so I can buy a new computer. That’s 100 people sending $10 or more to my Ko-Fi or PayPal OR joining my Patreon at the same level.

The Histories is my quirky encyclopedia project (now a wiki) wherein I write absolutely true short histories about real people. Lots of folks have already been included in the wiki, including my good friends Paul Weimer, Brandon O’Brien, Stina Leicht, and more, plus really awesome writerly folks like Premee Mohamed, T.J. Berry, Adrian Tchaikovsky, Diana Rowland, and more. These folks are wizards, space pirates, immortals, mad scientists, and so on!

Anyone can get an entry for themselves or for a friend or family member OR expand an existing entry (your own or someone else’s). If that interests you, read the Buy an Entry page for how to get one and some of the basic rules (what you can request, etc.).

Why?

As some of you might have heard, my desktop computer has hit its limit and has begun the normal process of decline that all computers eventually go through. I can still do a lot of the stuff I normally do, but resource-intensive stuff has become more challenging or outright impossible. Given the age of the computer (about 8 years), upgrades are basically pointless. Even if I could identify the problem, I’d spend more money updating a machine whose ceiling is at least half a decade out of date than is worth it. Computers are weird.

While I can *live* without a new desktop computer, getting one would make it so I can continue doing things like streaming geek chats, Skiffy and Fanty live shows, and games and make it easier to complete fan activities (podcasting, fanwriting, editing, etc.) and professional activities (it is so much easier to grade on a desktop). All of my streaming activities will end when this computer dies because, well, none of my other devices can reliably handle that level of computing.

I’ve been thinking about getting a new computer for over a year now, but I’ve not been able to financially justify it due to a combination of financial adversity and very expensive bills coming due. Basically, all my earned income is going to pay for things that, in the grand scheme, are more important (family, home repair bills, car bills, life bills, and, eventually, student loans).

And since I’ve got this weird hang-up about working for money and an even weirder hang-up with feeling like normal everyday life stuff isn’t really a great reason to ask people for money (I’ve got issue, lol), I’ve decided I’m going to do a thing involving The Histories. And that thing is?

I’m going to write more of them.

So…let’s see if we can get this done, shall we?

Book Review: Start Finishing by Charlie Gilkey (2022)

Sometime near the end of the Spring semester, I decided it was time to take another crack and reorganizing my life. I’ve gone through years of on again / off again burnout, some of it my own fault (I’m disorganized and try to do too much) and some of it a consequence of things about which I have no control (my former university essentially bankrupted itself, forcing me to find a new job in my field, and I’ve since moved twice — the short version). All that burnout and overfilled plate-ism has made it harder to keep up with grading and find the energy to complete tasks on time. So it seemed only logical to use my university library privileges to borrow a variety of recommend productivity and project management books to see what advice, systems, etc. are out there.

A Reading List of Dystopian Fiction and Relevant Texts (Apropos of Nothing in Particular)

Why would someone make a list of important and interesting works of dystopian fiction? Or a suggested reading list of works that are relevant to those dystopian works? There is absolutely no reason other than raw interest. There’s nothing going on to compel this. There is nothing in particular one making such a list would hope you’d learn. The lists below are not an exhaustive list. There are bound to be texts I have forgotten or texts you think folks should read that are not listed. Feel free to make your own list and tell me about it OR leave a comment. I’ll add things I’ve missed! Anywhoodles. Here goes:

Duke’s Best EDM Tracks of 2024

And so it came to pass that I finished up my annual Best of EDM [Insert Year Here] lists. I used to do these on Spotify before switching to Tidal, and I continued doing them on Tidal because I listen to an absurd amount of EDM and like keeping track of the tunes I love the most. Below, you will find a Tidal playlist that should be public. You can listen to the first 50 tracks right here, but the full playlist is available on Tidal proper (which has a free version just like Spotify does). For whatever reason, the embedded playlist breaks the page, and so I’ve opted to link to it here and at the bottom of this post. Embeds are weird. Or you can pull songs into your preferred listening app. It’s up to you. Some caveats before we begin:
