I’m going to run off to the comic book shop at some point this week. And that means I’m going to buy me some comics…which is where you lot come in. Since I haven’t been in the comic/graphic novel world in a while (aside from some manga here or there), I really don’t know what’s interesting and what’s not. I’d like to know what kind of stuff you have enjoyed that you think I might enjoy too.
What I’m looking for:
- SF/F-ish stuff (broadly speaking)
- Things that won’t require me to be overly familiar with preceding material (so don’t drop me flat in the middle of a story arc if I need to have read the previous two to figure out what the hell is going on)
- Graphic novels OR standard comics (or collections/omnibuses)
- No “universe” restrictions (you can throw me into DC, Marvel, or whatever)
Pretty basic wants, no? Superheroes, space stuff, dragons, whatever. I’ll take my list of suggestions and go play around.

The Unwritten by Mike Carey is amazing. It's about the son of a man who made a billion dollars writing a rip off of Harry Potter, but then things begin to happen that blur the line between reality and fiction.

I don't collect many these days, but you should definitely take a look at the Hawkeye comics. I think they're outstanding.

The current run of Prophet- its fantastic, weird sci-fi. No relation to its 90s namesake beyond the name and a few hat tips.

You want Shaun Tan's The Arrival. You may not know you want it, but you definitely do.
Agree with Adam that The Unwritten is excellent.
I've heard lots of good things about The Arrival. Of course, Tan did win some big award or something. Oscar or something… 😛
If you haven't read it already, The Sandman series is great. It's split up into seven volumes, the first is Preludes and Nocturnes.
In PRELUDES & NOCTURNES, an occultist attempting to capture Death to bargain for eternal life traps her younger brother Dream instead. After his 70 year imprisonment and eventual escape, Dream, also known as Morpheus, goes on a quest for his lost objects of power. Along with Sandman for Fantasy, "Transmetropolitan" is the standard recommendation for Vertigo Sci-Fi. I'd also keep an eye out for REMIND which was a 2-volume Kickstarted sci-fi GN (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/brubaker/remind-volume-2-and-box-set)but I know the creator distributed a bunch to comic shops, so you can look and see.
Not sure if you can get it in the States, but 2000ad or Judge Dredd year one
